Where to look for outside scholarships?

Over 80 percent of all aid awarded comes from state and federal aid programs another 19 percent comes from institutional and other sources. You can find out about all of these sources through any of the following resources:

    • Your high school guidance counselor
    • The higher education agency in your home state. Many companies and labor unions have education assistance programs
    • Foundations, religious organization, fraternities, sororities and civic groups such as 4-h, elks, Kiwanis, girl scouts, and boy scouts
    • The public or school library will usually have reference books describing many private scholarships
    • Your local chamber of commerce
    • The local veterans administration office veterans' educational benefits may be available if you or your spouse is a veteran or the dependent of a veteran
    • Professional organizations in your field of study these can be found in the U.S. department of labor's occupational outlook handbook available at the public library

The above resources provide most of the additional aid sources available. There are many private scholarship services that provide lists of "sources" of financial assistance.

The department of education does not evaluate such services. You may check an agency's reputation by contacting the better business bureau or a state attorney general's office.

Keep in mind that the above sources usually provide information free of charge and most aid sources have little or no application or filing fees associated with them.

Caution: Should be used when considering any agency that charges substantial fees for either a search or an application. For a free and easy way to find out about scholarships, you may want to check out the FastWeb.com Scholarship Search Service you may find additional Scholarships for the Miami Dade area residents and other available country wide.
