What does a computer support specialist do?

Computer network support specialists typically do the following:

  • Test and evaluate existing network systems
  • Perform regular maintenance to ensure that networks operate correctly
  • Troubleshoot local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and Internet systems

Computer network support specialists, also called technical support specialists, usually work in their organization’s IT department. They help IT staff analyze, troubleshoot, and evaluate computer network problems.

They play an important role in the daily upkeep of their organization’s networks by finding solutions to problems as they occur. Solving an IT problem in a timely manner is important because organizations depend on their computer systems.

Technical support specialists may provide assistance to the organization’s computer users through phone, email, or in-person visits. They often work under network specialists, who handles more complex tasks.

How Do Help-Desk Technicians and Computer Support Specialists Differ?

Help-desk technicians usually provide technical help to non-IT computer users. They respond to phone and email requests for help. Sometimes they make site visits so that they can solve a problem in person.  Ultimately though this role is fairly interchangeable, and you’ll find career opportunities

Help-desk technicians may solve a range of problems that vary with the industry and the particular firm. Some technicians work for large software companies or for support service firms and must give instructions to business customers on how to use complex programs. Sometimes they work with other technicians to resolve a problem.

Others work in call centers, answering simpler questions from consumers. Some technicians work for organizations and help non-IT workers with their computer problems.

A computer support specialist can often find themselves in the role of a help-desk technician as the skillset needed to fill both roles are quite similar.  You may find yourself working more closely with the staff you are supporting, compared to working underneath IT specialists.

Is a computer support specialist the same as IT?

While both a computer support specialists and an IT specialist would work in the same area of a company, you’ll often find IT specialists dealing with more complex networking issues then a support specialist would.

In addition to dealing with the needs of users, IT specialists will also need to be concerned with security, file storage and backups, any custom internal computer processes, as well as hardware for a company.

A computer support specialist will act as more of the “front lines” for an IT department and generally help users with issues that are too minor for an IT supports specialist to cover.

How Much Does A Computer Support Specialist Make?

While salaries for computer support specialists certainly vary between locations, you’ll find the following range of salaries average for the industry:

  • Lowest Paid 25%: $40,730 annual salary
