    Course Overview:

    The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to establish standards and requirements for the maintenance and transmission of health care information. The goal of HIPAA is to protect the security and confidentiality of electronic patient health information and cut the cost of print-based record transactions.
    Any organization that accesses, stores, maintains, or transmits patient-identifiable information is affected by the HIPAA legislation and is required by law to meet specified deadlines.

     

    Course Description:

    This course constitutes an overview of federal privacy regulations implemented under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), with a particular focus on the tasks and responsibilities that health workers are most likely to encounter. State privacy law is beyond the scope of this course, but health workers should be aware that federal privacy regulations are not generally superseded by more stringent state laws. The course briefly mention how nurses as employees may be affected by HIPAA.

    -Patient rights
    -Administrative requirements
    -Compliance
    -Developing a HIPAA attitude

    Intended Audience:

    All healthcare employees who interact with patients and patient information in their working lives.
    The participant will be introduced to the provisions of the HIPAA law and regulations

     

    Learning Strategies:

    Lecture and discussion methods will be used to present the information on HIPAA law and supplemental videotapes

     

    Evaluation Criteria:

    -Post Test
